August 23rd Update: A hefty session.
Today’s update will be rather short! Not much to talk about at this time — which is a wonder, because I’m usually a talker. I will have some more topics lined up real soon for the future, especially in the realm of fighter conditioning and strength training — but for now, all I’ve got to say is that today was heavy. I woke up rather late and was plagued half the time by an irritating headache. It only let up for a little while during today’s jiu-jitsu session, which (just like yesterday’s weightlifting) I wanted to skip.
Just a sliver, though. While I obviously love good training days, the only thing more satisfying than feeling energized and effective during training is when you push your way through a training session you just couldn’t really get into, and you come out on the other side of it, proud of yourself for sticking to your guns and staying disciplined. It’s the same feeling you get when you skip that candy bar on the way to the cashier at the grocery store, or when you decide to not get takeout and actually make yourself a quick and healthy meal. It’s not always fun, but that’s not what life is supposed to be about at all times. Sometimes, it’s about sticking to principle.
Today’s BJJ Session
Today I got to review my last session’s main element — armbar from full mount, as well as armbar from closed guard. I’ll have to get my body used to the motions, but I do get the gist of it. From now on, I hope to be using the armbar more often, so I can get used to seeing the right opportunities to build up into it during rolling.
Speaking of rolling, today’s BJJ session ended on a happy note for me. Although I got reamed by a guy who had about as much experience as me — and was much more aggressive and intuitive, kudos to him and his talent, or my lack of it — I did actually get the armbar on him at last. There are some mind games going on in my head as I roll with others — I’m reluctant to get aggressive, mostly because when I do end up in a dominant position, I get a feeling of hesitation due to my lack of technique. I just don’t know what to do.
From a defensive position, I can react and reply, and survive. I don’t care about points-based matches, and I don’t really care for competitions either — but playing defensively seems more beneficial right now than playing offensively, simply because sharpening my counters seems to me like a better use of my time right now.
That being said, my sparring partner today was truly skilled for his experience level. Well fucking done.
